Teaching Statement
I believe that as someone who is always learning herself, I will be able to relate to the frustrations that mastering an instrument can bring forth. Every student who comes through my door is met with a smile and encouragement. I believe that every person is musical, it just takes some longer than others to realize it.
For me, music is about emotion and connection. Sessions are relaxed and rooted in positivity and confidence building. We work at your pace to whatever level you're comfortable. My main prerogative is to help you find a real connection with music. This will be achieved with practice in harmonizing, and finding "your sound". On the more technical side, most voice lessons will be focused on breath control, tone & pitch, song work, and musicianship (straight tones, arpeggios, scales, and chords).
Education
2015 - Present: Voice student at the Contemporary Music and Technology Program at Selkirk College.
2011: Graduate of the Gulf Islands School of Performing Arts.
Biography
I am a lifelong musician studying voice at Selkirk College. I have years of performance experience and am currently enrolled in a musicianship program to better my understanding of the world of music and the use of my own instrument. I am currently in my second semester of a two year program. I am taking 11 separate music specific classes including Harmony, Ear Training, Private Voice Lessons, Vocal Sight Reading, Ensemble Classes, and Computer Applications & MIDI. Everything I have so far learned can be applied to lessons with students.
Performance experience:
- Vocalist with Selkirk College's Ensembles in our weekly performance class. (Lights, live band, sound check, "the works").
- Stage Manager at Art Spring Theatre for the Spring 2015 Gulf Island Secondary Music Show.
- 8 full scale productions at Art Spring Theatre on Salt Spring Island working as both backstage staff and a performer.
- Countless coffee shop shows and open mic nights over the years.
Studio Policies
Mostly, have a good time and don't let fear be your guide. "Never let perfection be the enemy of progress." - Teron Wolf
PLEASE:
- NO LATES. If you are going to be, I ask that you let me know as soon as you can that you're running behind.
- DO NOT TEXT AND DRIVE. Take an extra minute (you're already late), and pull over. Nothing is worth an accident.
- NO REFUNDS FOR NO SHOWS. If you need to cancel a lesson, please let me know no later than 24 hours prior to the cancellation. Some exceptions apply (hospital, family emergency, etc...).
- DON'T SPREAD THE GERMS. As a vocalist, getting sick is an incredible hassle. Please, if you're feeling ill, stay home, rest and get better. Keep your lip trills going softly to keep everything moving, drink tea, and sleep. Nothing is more important than your health. Stay in line with the cancellation policy and everyone is happier.
Also, I have a zero tolerance policy for violence or disrespect towards anyone, including yourself.
